It's been a super interesting couple of weeks! The big bit was my attendance at the World Strategic Forum in Coral Gables. This is in a separate blog but it had Global 2000 CEOs, some government and quasi-government orgs and some NGOs. Lots of take-aways! Next day, I went to a dinner for New World Angels in Boca Raton and the next day (Thursday) met with a very successful venture capitalist. That was better than the week before when I spend several days at the condo because the air con was totally out at the house and so had unbearable temps! Over this period, I also met with an associate of a big time private equity firm that has some notable staff. On more personal terms, Arren and I ate at Malakor in Coral Gables and Cook and Cork in Coral Springs where we saw the NPC First Call Out show. This last Friday and Saturday, we saw Mr. Olympia on PPV. We also saw a cabaret show last night and did take out from La Bamba. Lastly, I bought a fine art print from Andrew Mosedale. Whew!

Just a quick post. I was fortunate to have attended the World Strategic Forum in Coral Gables (Miami). Dozens of countries participated and we heard from the CEOs from the Global 2000 (e.g., Siemens, Lloyd’s of London, Allstate, etc.), government and quasi-government (e.g., governor of Sao Paulo, president of Fed, St. Louis, etc.) and NGOs. The theme was “Mastering the Economic Revival”.
There is too much to list but some of my 50,000 foot takeaways:

• Climate is the biggest threat globally as it effects every country, form of government and resource. We now need to consider how to respond to its effect since it can’t be completely certain about fixing it at this point.
• Second biggest threat to businesses and governments is cyber-you-name-it. It is fast, potentially lethal, borderless. And the more pervasive technology becomes, the greater the threat.
• Good news and bad about Covid. Technology was supercharged during the last 20 months, the economies have largely recovered (with developed countries more than undeveloped), but social recovery is lagging.
• There will be no “day after” Covid. Good things include more work options, new ways of learning, tech adjustments including interfaces that will be forever touchless, but then there will be the next one. We’ve had SARS, Ebola, etc. and this has only been a few years.
• First world countries are becoming richer economically but poorer socially. Tribalism, mis- (and dis-)information, and dysfunctional politics are impacting us significantly, and being turbo-charged by social platforms. Social needs to be regulated.
• Democratic and capitalist countries need to supplement short-term quarter-by-quarter thinking with longer term thinking that goes beyond “my time in office” and goes beyond ESG goals but includes, for example, upskilling its workforce for jobs that don’t yet exist but will in the near future. Even in this fast-paced world, CEOs need 10 and 20 year plans. And measured on them.
• AI & ML is way more pervasive than most people think. For example, for the new hybrid learning models (in-person and on-line), AI is already working with students on how to learn better and even help them decide on a reasonable major for their interests.
• Fintech and particular crypto is hot-hot-hot. El Salvador now has 50% of its population using bit coin in just one month. One bitcoin wallet managed by 5 people got more deposits that Citibank got with 200k people. Etc.

Lastly, and this is my add. We have historically used “Newtonian” thinking to solve problems. That is, by looking at the past, we have extrapolated a future. We now need new ways of thinking – we need “quantum” thinking -- since we can never know where the particle will be with complete certainty.
